How to add payment methods to PrestaShop

What is a payment method?

A payment method is a way for customers to pay, such as bank transfer, card or PayPal. PrestaShop is free software for running an online shop. It handles each payment method with a small add-on called a module. A payment gateway is a company that safely handles card payments for you.

These steps follow PrestaShop 1.7 and 8. Menus may differ in other versions.

Step 1: See what is available

1. Log in to your PrestaShop admin panel.
2. Click Payment in the left menu.
3. Click Payment Methods.
4. Look at the list. You may see modules already installed, such as bank wire and cash on delivery.

Step 2: Set up a built-in method

1. On the Payment Methods page, find the method you want. Examples are Wire payment or Payments by check.
2. Click Configure.
3. Enter the details customers need. For bank wire, enter your account owner, account details and bank address.
4. Click Save.

Step 3: Add a new method

For a gateway such as PayPal or Stripe, you need a module.

1. Open a free account with the payment company. They give you keys or login details for your shop.
2. In PrestaShop, go to Modules, then Module Manager.
3. Click Upload a module to add a file from the payment company. You can also search the list for the gateway's name.
4. Click Install.
5. Click Configure.
6. Paste in your keys or account details. Keep them private.
7. Choose test mode first, if available.
8. Click Save.

Step 4: Choose who can use it

1. Go to Payment, then Preferences.
2. Find the restriction boxes for currencies, groups, countries and carriers.
3. Tick the boxes where each method should show.
4. Click Save.

If a method is not ticked, customers will not see it at checkout.

Step 5: Test the checkout

1. Open your shop as a customer.
2. Add a product to the cart and go to checkout.
3. Check the new method shows up.
4. Place a test order using the gateway's test mode.
5. Switch to live mode when the test works.
