What do you need first?
PrestaShop is free software for running an online shop. Before you add a product, get these ready:
- A product name.
- A short and a long description.
- A price.
- One or more clear photos.
- A category. A category is a group of similar products, like "Shoes".
These steps follow PrestaShop 1.7 and 8. Menus may differ in other versions.
Steps
- Log in to your PrestaShop admin panel.
- Click Catalog in the left menu.
- Click Products.
- Click the New product button.
- Type the Name of your product.
- Choose Standard product as the type. Other types are for packs and downloads.
- Drag your photos into the image area, or click to choose files. The first photo becomes the main one.
- Fill in the Summary. This is the short text shown in lists.
- Fill in the Description. This is the full text on the product page.
- Pick the Categories where the product should appear. Choose a main category too.
- Enter the price in the Pricing area. Pick the tax rule if it asks. Tax rules come from your tax settings, so ask your accountant if unsure.
- Open Quantities and enter how many items you have in stock.
- Open SEO to edit the page title and description that search engines show. This is optional but useful.
- Switch the product to Online. An offline product is hidden from customers.
- Click Save.
Add variations (optional)
Use combinations when a product comes in sizes or colours.
- Open the Combinations tab on the product page.
- Create attributes, such as Size and Colour, under Catalog, then Attributes & Features, if they do not exist.
- Choose the values and click Generate.
- Set the stock for each combination.
- Click Save.
Check the result
- Click the Preview button on the product page.
- Check the photos, text and price.
- Add the product to the cart as a test.
Tip: Use clear photos of the same size. Shops look much more professional that way.
Quick recap
- Go to Catalog, Products and click New product.
- Fill in the name, photos, description, category, price and stock.
- Set the product to Online and save.
- Preview it to check everything.
