Make PrestaShop Work With HTTPS

This guide shows how to switch your PrestaShop store to secure HTTPS pages.

What is HTTPS?

HTTPS is the secure version of a web address. It uses a certificate, which is like an ID card for your website. The padlock in the browser shows that it works. Visitors feel safer, and it protects card and password details.

Before you start: You need an SSL certificate installed on your domain. Open https://yourdomain.com first. If the browser shows a warning, ask Hostvento support for help.

Steps

  1. Log in to your PrestaShop back office. This is the admin area of your store.
  2. In the left menu, click Shop Parameters, then General. In PrestaShop 1.6 the menu is Preferences, then General.
  3. Find the option Enable SSL. Choose Yes.
  4. Click Save.
  5. A link appears that says to click here to check if your shop supports HTTPS. Click it.
  6. If the new page opens without a warning, go back to the settings page.
  7. Find Enable SSL on all pages (some versions call it Force SSL on all pages). Choose Yes.
  8. Click Save.
  9. Open Shop Parameters, then Traffic & SEO, then the SEO & URLs page. Scroll to the shop URL section. In PrestaShop 1.6 it is under Preferences, then SEO & URLs.
  10. Check the Shop domain SSL box matches your domain.
  11. Clear the cache. Go to Advanced Parameters, then Performance, and click Clear cache.
  12. Visit your store in a new browser window. Look for the padlock.

If something looks wrong

A page may say it is "not fully secure". This is called mixed content. It means a picture or script still loads from an http:// address. Find it and change it to https://.

If you cannot open the back office after the change, ask Hostvento support to help you turn SSL off in the database until it is fixed.

Tip: Take a backup of your store before you change settings. It lets you go back if needed.

Quick recap

  • Install an SSL certificate first.
  • Turn on Enable SSL, then check HTTPS works.
  • Turn on SSL for all pages.
  • Clear the cache.
  • Look out for mixed content warnings.
