What is an SSL certificate?
An SSL certificate is a small digital file. It proves your website is really yours. It also scrambles the data between your visitors and your store. Think of it as a sealed envelope instead of a postcard.
Two things must happen. First, the certificate is installed on your domain. Second, PrestaShop is told to use it.
Part 1: Get the certificate installed
- Log in to the Hostvento client area.
- Open your hosting control panel and look for a section called SSL/TLS or SSL/TLS Status.
- Check whether your domain already has a certificate.
- If it does not, ask Hostvento support how to get one for your plan. You can open a ticket.
- Type
https://yourdomain.comin your browser. If you see a padlock, the certificate works.
Part 2: Tell PrestaShop to use it
- Log in to your PrestaShop back office.
- Go to Shop Parameters, then General. In PrestaShop 1.6, go to Preferences, then General.
- Set Enable SSL to Yes and click Save.
- Click the link that checks whether your shop supports HTTPS. A new tab opens. It must load without a warning.
- Back on the first tab, set Enable SSL on all pages to Yes.
- Click Save.
- Open Advanced Parameters, then Performance, and click Clear cache.
Warning: Do not turn on SSL in PrestaShop before the certificate works. If you do, you may be locked out of your back office. Test HTTPS in the browser first.
Check your work
- Open your home page, a product page and the checkout in a private window.
- Look for the padlock on each one.
- If a page warns about mixed content, a picture or script still uses
http://. Change it tohttps://.
Tip: If you are locked out, ask Hostvento support for help to switch SSL off again, then repeat the steps.
Quick recap
- Install the certificate first and test
https://in your browser. - Turn on Enable SSL in PrestaShop, then turn it on for all pages.
- Clear the cache.
- Check several pages for the padlock.
