What is a 503 error?
A 503 error means "the service is not available right now". The server is working, but it cannot give the page. It is like a shop with a "Back soon" sign on the door.
With Magento, a 503 usually has one of these causes:
- The store is stuck in maintenance mode. This is a switch that closes the store while it updates.
- The server ran out of resources, such as memory or processes.
- An update, import or cron job is still running.
- A broken extension or setting.
Warning: Take a backup of your files and database before you change anything.
Fix 1: Turn off maintenance mode
- Log in to the client area and open your control panel.
- Open File Manager and go to your Magento folder.
- Click Settings and turn on Show Hidden Files.
- Look for a file named
maintenance.flag. In Magento 2 it sits in thevarfolder. In Magento 1 it sits in the main folder. - Delete that file.
- Reload your store.
If you have command line (SSH) access, you can use this in Magento 2 instead:
php bin/magento maintenance:disable
This command turns maintenance mode off.
Fix 2: Check for a stuck update
- Wait ten minutes. Big updates and imports can take time.
- Look in the
var/logfolder for new messages. - If a task is stuck, ask Hostvento support whether any process is running too long.
Fix 3: Check resource limits
- In the control panel, look for a resource usage page.
- If the numbers hit their limit, the server stops answering. Try again when traffic is lower.
- Ask Hostvento support whether your plan fits a Magento store. Magento needs more resources than a small blog.
Fix 4: Turn off a new extension
If the error started after you added an extension, rename its folder. Under app/code (Magento 2) or app/code/community (Magento 1), add _off to the end of the folder name. Then reload the store.
Tip: If nothing works, open a ticket. Include the time the error began and any recent changes you made.
Quick recap
- A 503 means the service is not available right now.
- Delete
maintenance.flagif the store is stuck in maintenance mode. - Check for long tasks and resource limits.
- Turn off any new extension.
- Ask support if it continues.
