Change the Default Currency in PrestaShop 1.6.x

This guide shows how to make a different currency, like euros or dollars, the main currency of your store.

Online Stores2 min read17 steps

What is the default currency?

The default currency is the money your store uses for its prices. Other currencies are worked out from it with an exchange rate. An exchange rate says how much one money is worth in another.

Tip: PrestaShop 1.6 is an old version. Newer versions work in a similar way, but the menu names may differ.
Warning: Changing the default currency does not convert your product prices. A price of 10 stays 10, but in the new money. Check your prices after the change. Take a backup of your database and files first.

Step 1: Add the new currency

  1. Log in to your PrestaShop back office.
  2. Click Localization in the main menu. In some 1.6 versions it is called International.
  3. Click Currencies.
  4. Click Add new currency.
  5. Choose the currency from the list. The list may fill in the name and code for you.
  6. Set Status to Enabled.
  7. Click Save.

Step 2: Make it the default

  1. Go to Localization, then the Localization page.
  2. Open the Configuration box.
  3. Find Default currency and pick the new one from the list.
  4. Click Save.

PrestaShop may show a warning that changing the default currency can affect prices and orders. Read it, then continue if you are sure.

Step 3: Fix the exchange rates

  1. Go back to Localization, then Currencies.
  2. Check the Exchange rate column. The default currency should show 1.
  3. Click the update link for live rates if you want PrestaShop to fetch them. Or edit each rate by hand.

Step 4: Check the store

  1. Open your store in a new window.
  2. Look at a few product prices.
  3. Edit any price that is now wrong.

Quick recap

  • The default currency is the main money for your prices.
  • Add the currency first, then choose it under Localization, Configuration.
  • Prices do not convert by themselves.
  • Update exchange rates and check prices.
