What is a sitemap?
A sitemap is a list of all the pages on your website. It is a map for search engines. Google reads it to find your products and categories faster. A new shop or a big shop benefits the most.
Step 1: Open the sitemap module
PrestaShop has a module called Google sitemap. A module is an add-on that gives your shop a new feature.
- Log in to your PrestaShop back office.
- Go to Modules, then Module Manager. In PrestaShop 1.6 it is Modules and Services.
- Type
sitemapin the search box. - Find Google sitemap. If the button says Install, click it. If it says Configure, it is already installed.
Step 2: Generate the sitemap
- Click Configure on the Google sitemap module.
- Look at the settings. You can choose whether to include products that are not in stock, and more.
- Click the Generate sitemap button. Wait for it to finish.
- You will see a message with the address of your sitemap. It looks like
https://yourdomain.com/1_index_sitemap.xml. - Copy that address.
- Open it in a new browser tab. You should see a list of web addresses.
The module may also show a special link for automatic updates. This link can be used with a cron job, which is a timer in your control panel that runs a task on a schedule. Ask Hostvento support if you need help with cron jobs.
Step 3: Send it to Google
- Sign in to Google Search Console. This is a free Google tool for site owners.
- Add your website if you have not done so yet, and prove you own it. Google shows you how.
- In the left menu, click Sitemaps.
- Paste the sitemap address into the box.
- Click Submit.
Tip: Make the sitemap again after you add many new products or categories. It does not update by itself unless you set a cron job.
Tip: If the module is not in the list on your version, check for another sitemap module, or ask Hostvento support.
