How to Change Product Image Quality in PrestaShop

This guide shows how to make your PrestaShop product pictures sharper, or smaller and faster to load.

Online Stores2 min read14 steps

What is image quality?

PrestaShop is software for running an online shop. When you upload a product photo, it makes several smaller copies for lists, product pages and thumbnails. Compression is how it shrinks those copies. Higher quality gives a sharper picture but a bigger file. Lower quality gives a smaller file that loads faster. You can pick the balance.

The menu names differ a little between versions. Look for the closest match if yours looks different.

Steps

Take a backup of your shop before you change image settings.

  1. Log in to your PrestaShop admin panel.
  2. Go to Design then Images. On older versions it is Preferences then Images.
  3. Find the section called Images generation options (or Image generation options).
  4. Look for JPEG compression. Enter a number from 1 to 100. A higher number means better quality. Many shops use a number in the range of 80 to 90.
  5. Look for PNG compression. This is a scale from 0 to 9. A higher number means more compression.
  6. Set Generate images based on one side of the source image and Maximum file size of product pictures if you want to limit very big uploads.
  7. Click Save.

Regenerate your thumbnails

The new settings only apply to new pictures. To fix old ones, make them again.

  1. On the same Images page, find the Regenerate thumbnails section.
  2. Choose Products from the list.
  3. Choose All image types, or a single one.
  4. Click Regenerate thumbnails.

Warning: tick the option to erase previous images only if you have a backup. Otherwise, leave it off.

Check the result

  1. Open a product page on your shop.
  2. Look at the picture. Is it clear enough?
  3. Clear the cache in Advanced Parameters then Performance, so you see the newest version.
Tip: Upload good source photos, at least as large as your biggest image size. Setting quality to 100 gives huge files and can slow the shop.

Quick recap

  • Quality controls the balance of sharpness and speed.
  • Change JPEG and PNG compression on the Images page.
  • Regenerate thumbnails to apply it to old pictures.
  • Clear the cache and look at your product pages.
