What is Softaculous?

Softaculous is an app installer inside your control panel. It installs programs like WordPress. It can also make backups of them and restore those backups later.

Warning: A restore replaces your current site with the older copy. New posts, pictures or orders made after the backup will be gone. If your site still works in part, make a fresh backup before you restore.

Steps

  1. Log in to your control panel. Your welcome email tells you how. You can also start from the Hostvento client area.
  2. Open Softaculous Apps Installer.
  3. Find the Backups link. It is often in the top bar or the side menu.
  4. Look at the list of backups. Each one shows the site name, the date and the size.
  5. If your backup file is on your computer and not in the list, use the upload option on that page to add it first.
  6. Find the backup you want. Click the Restore icon next to it.
  7. A box opens. Tick the parts to restore. Choose both the files and the database for a full restore. A database is the filing cabinet that holds your posts and settings.
  8. Click Restore Installation.
  9. Wait for the finished message. Do not close the page while it works.
  10. Open your website and check that it looks right. Log in to the admin area too.

Common problems

  • The backup is missing. It may have been deleted. Check if you have a copy on your computer.
  • The restore stops with an error. Your account may be out of disk space. Delete files you do not need, then try again.
  • The site looks old. The backup may be older than you think. Check the date in the list.
Tip: If you are stuck, open a support ticket. Tell support the name of the site and the date of the backup.

Quick recap

  • Softaculous can restore the backups it made.
  • Open Backups, click Restore, pick files and database.
  • A restore replaces the current site, so back up first if you can.
  • Check your site when it finishes.
