What is backup storage?
Dropmysite is a cloud backup service made by another company. It keeps spare copies of your data online. Those copies take up room, like books on a shelf. When the shelf is full, new backups may fail.
How much space you get depends on your plan. Ask Hostvento support whether Dropmysite is on your plan and what your limit is.
What uses the most space?
- Large pictures and videos
- Old files you no longer need
- Cache folders, which hold temporary copies that your site can rebuild
- Large email boxes full of old messages
- Old copies of backups stored inside your site folder
Steps
- Log in to the client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php and open cPanel.
- Open the Dropmysite tool. Find the part that shows how much space you have used.
- In cPanel, open Disk Usage. It shows which folders are biggest.
- Take a backup of your site before you delete anything.
- Delete files you are sure you do not need. Old test files and zip files are common ones.
- Clear your site's cache from inside your website's own settings, if it has a cache.
- Open your email tool. Delete spam and old messages you do not need.
- Back in Dropmysite, look for a setting that lets you leave out some folders or file types. Exclude cache folders and folders with copies you do not need.
- Look for a setting about how long old backups are kept. A shorter time uses less space. Do not make it so short that you lose useful history.
- Run a backup and check that it finishes.
Tip: Never exclude folders that hold your real content, such as uploads or databases. If you are not sure whether a folder is safe to leave out, ask support first.
Warning
Deleting files cannot always be undone. Always keep a backup before you delete. If your backup space is still full after cleaning, ask support about your options.
Quick recap
- Backups fill up space over time.
- Find big folders with Disk Usage in cPanel.
- Remove files you do not need, but back up first.
- Leave out cache folders from the backup.
- Ask Hostvento support about your plan and limit.
