What are these?

Blogger is a free blog service. WordPress is a program that you install on your own hosting. With WordPress, you control your site. Moving your blog means copying your content from the first place to the second.

Blogger, WordPress, blog

Before you start

  • You need WordPress installed on your hosting. Many control panels have an app installer for this.
  • Keep your Blogger blog online until you finish. Do not delete it yet.

Steps

  1. Log in to Blogger.
  2. Open your blog. In the left menu, click Settings.
  3. Find the section about backing up or exporting. Click Back up content (or Download). Save the XML file to your computer. An XML file is a text file that holds your content in an organized way.
  4. Log in to your WordPress dashboard. The address is usually your site name followed by /wp-admin.
  5. Go to Tools, then Import.
  6. Find Blogger in the list. Click Install Now, then Run Importer.
  7. Click Choose File and select the XML file you saved. Click Upload file and import.
  8. WordPress asks you to assign an author. Choose an existing user, or make a new one.
  9. Click Submit. Wait for the import to finish.
  10. Go to Posts and Pages. Check that your content is there.

After the import

  • Pictures. They may still sit on Blogger's servers. Check and re-upload if needed.
  • Links. Old links to your Blogger address will not work on the new site by themselves. Set up a redirect later, or ask support for help.
  • Design. Choose a theme under Appearance, then Themes.
Tip: If the file is too big to upload, ask Hostvento support. You can open a support ticket.

Quick recap

  • Export your Blogger content as an XML file.
  • In WordPress, use Tools then Import then Blogger.
  • Upload the file and pick an author.
  • Check posts, pictures and links before you close the old blog.
