Reach cPanel when your IP address keeps changing

This guide explains why you can get blocked from cPanel when your home IP changes, and how to stay connected.

What is a dynamic IP address?

An IP address is a number that identifies your internet connection, like the house number on your street. Most home internet plans give you a dynamic IP address. That means your provider changes it from time to time, for example when you restart your router. A static IP address never changes.

Why does this cause trouble?

Servers use firewalls. A firewall is a guard that blocks bad visitors. Some servers also keep a list of IP addresses that may log in. If you added your old IP to a list and your IP changes, the guard no longer knows you. You may then see a blocked page or a timeout in cPanel.

Also, too many wrong password tries from your IP can get it blocked for a short time.

Steps to find out your current IP

  1. Open your browser.
  2. Search for "what is my IP".
  3. Note the number shown. It looks like four groups of digits, such as 203.0.113.25.

Steps to get access again

  1. Wait a few minutes. A temporary block often ends by itself.
  2. Restart your router. This may give you a new IP that is not blocked.
  3. Try your phone's mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. This uses a different IP.
  4. If you are still blocked, open a support ticket. Give your current IP address, and ask support to unblock it.

If you use an IP allow list

An allow list is a list of the only IPs that may enter. It is strong but awkward with a changing IP. Pick one of these choices.

  • Ask your internet provider for a static IP. This may cost extra.

  • Use a VPN with a fixed address. A VPN is a service that sends your traffic through one steady point.
  • Allow a small range of addresses instead of one. Ask support what is possible on your plan.
  • Use SSH key login instead of IP rules, if you manage a VPS.
Tip: Always use strong passwords and two-factor login if offered. They protect you even when you cannot lock access to one IP.

Avoid getting blocked again

  • Save your password in a password manager, so you do not mistype it.
  • Do not try many times in a row. Stop after two or three tries.
  • Keep your cPanel address bookmarked.

Quick recap

  • A dynamic IP changes from time to time.
  • Firewalls and allow lists may block your new IP.
  • Find your current IP and send it to Hostvento support to unblock it.
  • A static IP or VPN gives you a steady address.
