What is cPanel?
cPanel is a control panel. It is a web page where you manage your website, emails and files. Think of it as the dashboard of a car. Your password is the key to it.
Why change your password?
- You think someone else knows it.
- You have used it for a long time.
- You used the same password on other websites.
Make a strong password
A strong password is hard to guess. Follow these simple rules:
- Use at least 12 characters.
- Mix capital letters, small letters, numbers and symbols.
- Do not use your name, birthday or the word "password".
- Do not reuse a password from another site.
Steps
- Log in to your client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
- Open your hosting service and click the button to log in to cPanel. You can also use the cPanel address and login from your welcome email.
- In cPanel, click your name or the small user icon at the top right.
- Click Password & Security. On some cPanel layouts, you find it under Preferences instead.
- Type your current password in Old Password.
- Type your new password in New Password.
- Type it again in New Password (Again).
- Look at the Strength bar. Try to make it green.
- Click Change your password now.
You will see a message that the password changed. Next time, log in with the new one.
Tip: The Password Generator button makes a strong password for you. Save it in a password manager. A password manager is an app that remembers passwords safely, so you do not have to.
What if you forgot your password?
You cannot use the steps above without the old password. Instead, log in to your Hostvento client area and open your hosting service. There you may be able to change the cPanel password. If you cannot, open a support ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.
Good to know
- Your cPanel password is not the same as your client area password.
- Changing it does not change your email account passwords.
- Apps that use your cPanel login, such as an FTP program, need the new password too.
