What is a staging site and a merge?
A staging site is a private copy of your live website. You test changes there first. A merge (or push) copies the changes from staging back to the live site. Some cPanel tools, such as WordPress Manager or Softaculous, offer this feature. It may depend on your plan. Ask Hostvento support if you cannot see it.
Sometimes things look wrong after a merge. Links may point to the staging address, images may vanish, or the staging copy may be out of date.
Step 1: Check the live site
- Open your live site in a private browser window.
- Click through the home page, a few posts and your menus.
- Look for broken pictures, wrong links or missing pages.
Step 2: Clear caches
- Clear the cache in any caching plugin.
- Clear your browser cache.
- If you use a CDN, clear its cache too.
Step 3: Fix the site address
- Log in to the live WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Settings, then General.
- Check that WordPress Address and Site Address show your real domain, not the staging one.
- Click Save Changes.
- Go to Settings, then Permalinks and click Save Changes to refresh links.
Step 4: Replace staging links in content
- Install a search and replace plugin such as Better Search Replace.
- Search for your staging address, for example
staging.yourdomain.com. - Replace it with your live domain.
- Run a dry run first, then run it for real.
Step 5: Check search visibility
Staging sites often ask search engines to skip them. After a merge, this setting can reach the live site.
- Go to Settings, then Reading.
- Make sure Discourage search engines from indexing this site is not ticked on the live site.
- Click Save Changes.
Step 6: Refresh your staging copy
After you merge, the staging copy is out of date. Delete it and make a new one from the live site so both match.
- Open your staging tool in cPanel.
- Remove the old staging copy.
- Create a new staging copy.
If it is still wrong
Restore your backup, then ask Hostvento support for help. Open a ticket and say what you see.
Quick recap
- Check the live site, then clear all caches.
- Make sure the site address is your real domain.
- Replace staging links and check search visibility.
- Create a fresh staging copy afterwards.
