Fix a cPanel temporary URL that does not work

This guide helps when your temporary address does not open your site, so you can still preview it before your domain is live.

What is a temporary URL?

A temporary URL is a short-term web address for your hosting account. It lets you see your site before your domain name points to the server. Your welcome email or your hosting service page in the client area shows the format for your plan. Ask Hostvento support if you cannot find it.

Common reasons it fails

  • The address was typed wrongly.
  • The account was only just created and is not ready yet.
  • Your site uses WordPress, which sends visitors to the real domain.
  • Files are in the wrong folder.
  • A rule in .htaccess blocks the address.
  • A cache shows an old result.
  • The temporary URL feature is not turned on for your plan.

Steps to fix it

  1. Check the spelling. Copy the address from your welcome email instead of typing it.
  2. Wait a short while if the account is new. Try again after a few minutes.
  3. Clear your browser cache, or open the address in a private window.
  4. Open File Manager in cPanel.
  5. Go to the public_html folder. Make sure your site files, such as index.html or index.php, are directly inside it.
  6. Look at the .htaccess file. It is hidden by default. Click Settings in File Manager and tick Show Hidden Files. Rename it to .htaccess-old and test the URL again. If it works, a rule in that file was the cause.
  7. Check that your file and folder permissions are normal: 755 for folders and 644 for files.
  8. If the page redirects to your real domain, read the WordPress section below.

If you use WordPress

WordPress stores its own address. If it is set to your real domain, the temporary URL jumps there. To stop this, edit wp-config.php and add these lines above the "That's all, stop editing" comment:

define( 'WP_HOME', 'http://your-temporary-address' );
define( 'WP_SITEURL', 'http://your-temporary-address' );

This makes WordPress use the temporary address for now. Remove the lines when your domain goes live.

Warning: Take a backup before you edit .htaccess or wp-config.php.

Still not working?

Open a support ticket. Tell support the exact address you typed and what you see on screen. Describe any error message too.

Quick recap

  • A temporary URL previews your site before the domain is live.
  • Check spelling, wait for new accounts, and clear the cache.
  • Make sure files sit in public_html and test without .htaccess.
  • For WordPress, set WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL.
