How to give other people their own cPanel logins

This guide shows you how to let a helper use your cPanel without sharing your main password.

Why not share one password?

Your main cPanel password opens everything. If you hand it to a web designer, they can change anything. If you want to remove their access later, you must change the password for all. A better way is to give each person their own login.

The tool: User Manager

cPanel has a tool called User Manager. It makes sub-accounts. A sub-account is a smaller login that belongs to your main account. Each sub-account can have its own email, FTP and web disk access. FTP is a way to send files to your site.

The tool may not appear on every plan. Ask Hostvento support if you cannot see it.

Steps

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. In the Preferences section, click User Manager.
  3. Click Add User.
  4. Type the person's Full Name.
  5. Type a Username and choose the domain from the list.
  6. Add a Contact Email Address. This is where they get a reset link.
  7. Set a Password, or choose to send an invite so they pick their own.
  8. Switch on the services this person needs: Email, FTP or Web Disk. Give only what is needed.
  9. Set the email quota or FTP folder, if asked.
  10. Click Create.

The new person logs in with their own username and password at the address in the invite.

Change or remove a user

  1. Open User Manager.
  2. Find the user in the list.
  3. Click Edit to change settings or reset the password.
  4. Click Delete to remove them. This removes their email data and FTP access, so back up anything needed first.

If the person needs more than email or FTP

Sub-accounts do not give full cPanel access. If they must change settings in cPanel, other choices are:

  • Ask Hostvento support if the plan has a way to add extra cPanel users.
  • Share a temporary password and change it when the work is done.
Tip: Turn on two-factor login for your main account. Look for Two-Factor Authentication in cPanel.

Quick recap

  • Do not share your main cPanel password.
  • Use User Manager to add sub-accounts.
  • Switch on only the services each person needs.
  • Delete the user when the job ends.
