How to update the cPanel licence on your server

If WHM shows a licence error, this guide shows how to refresh it. It needs root access, so it is for VPS and dedicated server owners.

What is a cPanel licence?

A licence is a permit to use software. Every cPanel server needs one. The licence is tied to the server's main IP address. The IP address is the server's number on the internet. cPanel checks the licence with its own servers. If it cannot find a match, you see a message like "Invalid License File".

Common reasons:

  • The server IP address changed.
  • The licence ran out or was not paid.
  • The server clock is wrong.
  • A firewall blocks the check.

Licence details such as costs and renewals are not covered here. Ask Hostvento support whether your licence comes with your plan.

Step 1: Check the basics

  1. Confirm your licence is active. Look in your client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php under Services. Ask support if you are not sure who holds the licence.
  2. Check the server date and time.
    date
This shows the server clock. A wrong clock breaks the check.
  3. Fix the clock if needed.
    yum install -y chrony
    systemctl enable --now chronyd
This keeps the clock right by itself.

Step 2: Refresh the licence

  1. Log in to the server over SSH as root.
  2. Run this command.
    /usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt
This asks cPanel's servers for a fresh licence file for this IP.
  3. Read the result. A good result says the update succeeded.
  4. Reload WHM in your browser.

Step 3: If it still fails

  1. Find the IP address your server uses to reach the internet.
    curl -s https://ipinfo.io/ip
This prints your public IP. It should match the IP the licence was issued for.
  2. If the IP changed, the licence must be moved to the new IP. Open a ticket with Hostvento support at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php. Tell them the old and new IP.
  3. Check your firewall allows outgoing connections on port 443 and 2086.
  4. Run /usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt again.
Tip: Do not run the command many times in a row. If it fails twice, the cause is usually the IP address or the licence itself.

Quick recap

  • The cPanel licence is tied to your server's IP address.
  • Check the server clock and your licence status.
  • Run /usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt as root.
  • If the IP changed, ask Hostvento support to move the licence.
