Set up a redirect in cPanel

This guide shows you how to send visitors from one web address to another using cPanel.

What is a redirect?

A redirect is like a "we have moved" sign on a shop door. A visitor types one address. The browser is sent to a different address on its own.

People use redirects when they change a page name, move to a new domain, or want www and non-www to go to one place.

Two kinds of redirect

  • Permanent (301): the move is for good. Search engines learn the new address. Use this most of the time.
  • Temporary (302): the move is only for a short time. Search engines keep the old address.

Choose permanent unless you plan to bring the old page back.

Tip: Take a backup of your site before you add redirects. A wrong redirect can make your site hard to open.

Steps

  1. Log in to your client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
  2. Open your hosting service and log in to cPanel.
  3. Find the Domains section.
  4. Click Redirects. On older cPanel layouts it is in the Domains group too.
  5. Under Type, choose Permanent (301) or Temporary (302).
  6. Pick your domain in the https?://(www.)? drop-down list.
  7. In the box after the slash, type the page or folder to send away. Leave it empty to redirect the whole domain.
  8. In Redirects to, type the full new address. Start with https://.
  9. Choose a www. redirection option. The first option redirects only with www, and the second only without. Another option covers both. Pick what fits your case.
  10. Tick Wild Card Redirect only if you want every page in the old folder to go to the new place.
  11. Click Add.

cPanel shows a message that the redirect was added.

Test it

  1. Open a new browser window.
  2. Type the old address.
  3. Check that you land on the new one.

If you still see the old page, clear your browser cache. The cache is a store of saved page copies. You can also try a private window.

Remove a redirect

  1. Scroll to Current Redirects at the bottom of the page.
  2. Click Delete next to the redirect.
  3. Confirm.

Quick recap

  • A redirect sends visitors from an old address to a new one.
  • Use 301 for permanent moves and 302 for short ones.
  • Go to Domains, then Redirects in cPanel.
  • Fill the form and click Add.
  • Test in a fresh browser window.
