What are SMTP and an IP address?
SMTP is the system that sends your email. The SMTP server is the computer that does this job. An IP address is the number address of a computer on the internet, like 192.0.2.10. It works like a house number for a computer.
First, find the SMTP server name
Your SMTP server usually has a name like mail.yourdomain.com. Look in your welcome email. Or log in to cPanel, open Email Accounts, and click Connect Devices. The name is listed there.
Method 1: Use ping on Windows
- Press the Windows key and type
cmd. - Click Command Prompt.
- Type this and press Enter:
ping mail.yourdomain.com
This sends a small test message. The reply shows the IP address in square brackets.
Method 2: Use nslookup
- Open Command Prompt on Windows, or Terminal on Mac or Linux.
- Type this and press Enter:
nslookup mail.yourdomain.com
This asks DNS for the number. DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns names into numbers. Look for the line named Address.
Method 3: Use dig on Mac or Linux
dig +short mail.yourdomain.com
This prints only the IP address.
Find the server that receives your mail
To see where your incoming mail goes, look up the MX record. An MX record tells the world which server takes your mail.
nslookup -type=mx yourdomain.com
Then look up the name it shows, using the steps above.
Other ways
- Your welcome email may list the server IP.
- cPanel often shows the Shared IP Address on the right side of the main page.
- You can ask Hostvento support.
