What does it mean?

An internal server error is also called error 500. The server tried to load the page, but hit a problem. It is like a shop where the front door opens but the till is broken. The cause is not always your fault.

Common causes

  • The server disk is full.
  • A cPanel service has stopped working.
  • A temporary problem after an update.
  • The server ran out of memory.
  • A damaged file in the account.

Easy checks for everyone

  1. Reload the page after one minute.
  2. Clear your browser cache. The cache is saved page data in your browser, and old data can cause trouble. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete and clear cached files.
  3. Try a different browser, or a private window.
  4. Try another device or network, such as your phone data.
  5. Check that you typed the right address, such as yourdomain.com/cpanel or yourdomain.com/webmail.

If other sites work, but only cPanel fails, the problem is probably on the server.

Steps for shared hosting users

You cannot fix server problems on shared hosting. Open a ticket at Hostvento support. Tell them these things:

  1. Which page shows the error (cPanel, WHM or webmail).
  2. The time it started.
  3. What you did just before.

Steps for VPS and dedicated owners

These steps need root access. Log in to your server with SSH, a safe way to run commands from far away.

  1. Check free disk space.
df -h

This shows each disk and how full it is. If one is at 100 percent, free space by removing old logs or backups. Take care to delete only what you are sure about.

  1. Read the cPanel error log.
tail -n 50 /usr/local/cpanel/logs/error_log

This prints the last 50 lines of the log. It often names the cause.

  1. Restart the cPanel service.
/scripts/restartsrv_cpsrvd

This restarts the cPanel web service. It is safe, but you will be logged out for a moment.

  1. Check memory with free -m. If it is full, find the heavy program or add more memory.
Tip: If the log is unclear, send it to support in your ticket.

Quick recap

  • Error 500 means a server-side problem.
  • Reload, clear the cache and try another browser.
  • Shared hosting: open a ticket.
  • Root users: check disk space, logs and restart cPanel.
