What does the message mean?
A quota is a limit on how much disk space an account can use. It is like a size limit on a school locker. A filesystem is the way a disk stores files. A disk can hold many filesystems.
The message appears in tools like WHM. It means the server has no disk with quotas turned on. So limits per account do not work.
/etc/fstab can stop the server from starting.Check the current state
- Log in to the server over SSH as root. SSH is a safe way to type commands on a remote server.
- Look at the disks and how they are mounted.
mount | grep -E 'usrquota|usrjquota'
This lists disks that have user quotas on. If it prints nothing, quotas are off.
Turn quotas on
- Make a copy of the filesystem table.
cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.bak
This saves a backup copy of the file.
- Open the file.
nano /etc/fstab
This opens the file in a simple text editor.
- Find the line for the disk that holds your home folders, often
/or/home. - In the options column, add
usrquota. Separate options with a comma and no spaces. For example, defaults, usrquota. - Save and close the file. In nano, press Ctrl+O, Enter, then Ctrl+X.
- Apply the change without restarting.
mount -o remount /home
This reloads that disk with its new options. Use / if your disk is mounted there. Some setups need a reboot instead.
- Build the quota files and switch quotas on.
quotacheck -cugm /home
quotaon -v /home
The first command builds the quota data. The second switches quotas on.
On a cPanel server
cPanel has a helper script. Run it as root.
/scripts/fixquotas
This repairs quota data for all accounts. Then in WHM, open Initial Quota Setup or check Tweak Settings if it asks.
Some servers use XFS or have quota settings in the boot options. If the steps do not work, ask Hostvento support.
Quick recap
- The message means no disk has quotas turned on.
- Add
usrquotato the disk in/etc/fstab. - Remount, then run
quotacheckandquotaon. - Use root access and back up first.
