What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a way to move files between your computer and your web hosting. Think of it as a delivery truck for files. An FTP client is the free program that drives the truck. FileZilla is a popular one.
What you need
- Host: your domain name, or the server address from your welcome email.
- Username: your cPanel username or an FTP account you made.
- Password: the password for that login.
- Port: 21 for FTP. Use 22 for SFTP if your plan supports it.
Your welcome email from Hostvento lists your account details. You can also sign in to the client area to see your services.
Steps
- Download FileZilla Client from its official website and install it.
- Open FileZilla.
- Find the quick connect bar at the top.
- Type your host in the Host box.
- Type your username in the Username box.
- Type your password in the Password box.
- Type the port in the Port box.
- Click Quickconnect.
- If a certificate message shows, read it and click OK to trust it.
- Wait for "Directory listing successful". You are now connected.
Find your way around
The left side shows files on your computer. The right side shows files on your server. Open the folder public_html on the right. This is where your website files live. Drag files from left to right to upload them. Drag from right to left to download.
Warning: if you delete or overwrite a file on the server, it may be gone for good. Download a backup copy first.
If it does not connect
- Check the username and password for typing mistakes.
- Check that your network does not block port 21.
- Open a support ticket if you are still stuck.
Quick recap
- You need host, username, password and port.
- Enter them in an FTP client and click Quickconnect.
- Upload your site files into
public_html. - Save the connection for next time.
