What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a way to move files between your computer and your website. Normally you use a special program, called an FTP client. In the past, browsers could also open FTP addresses.
Today, most modern browsers have removed or turned off FTP. Chrome and Firefox no longer support it. So the browser method may not work for you. Below are the options.
Option 1: try an FTP address in your browser
- Open your browser.
- Click the address bar.
- Type the address in this form:
ftp://username@yourdomain.com
Replace the username with your FTP username and the domain with your host name or server address from your welcome email. This asks the browser to start an FTP session.
- Press Enter.
- Type your password when asked.
- If the browser opens the folder list, click files to download them.
If the browser shows an error or does nothing, FTP is not supported in it. That is normal in new versions.
Warning: a browser FTP link uses plain FTP, which is not scrambled. Anyone watching the network could read your password. Do not use it on public Wi-Fi.
Option 2: use cPanel File Manager (best for beginners)
- Log in to the client area.
- Open your hosting service and log in to cPanel.
- Click File Manager.
- Browse, upload and download files right in the browser. It uses a safe web connection.
Option 3: use a free FTP program
- Install FileZilla Client.
- Type host, username, password and port in the top bar.
- Click Quickconnect.
This is the most reliable way for large or many files. Use SFTP when your plan supports it. Ask Hostvento support if it does.
If you cannot connect, open a support ticket.
Quick recap
- Most new browsers no longer support FTP.
- You can try an
ftp://address, but it may fail. - cPanel File Manager works in any browser and is safe.
- An FTP program like FileZilla is best for big jobs.
