How to Reset cPanel File Manager Settings

If File Manager looks wrong or acts strangely, you can reset it. This guide shows the safe ways to do that.

What does "reset" mean here?

cPanel is the control panel for your hosting account. A control panel is a website where you manage your hosting. File Manager is the tool inside cPanel that shows your website files and folders.

Resetting File Manager does not delete your website files. It only fixes how the tool looks and behaves. You may do this when the page loads blank, the file list does not update, or a setting is stuck.

Two things can cause trouble. One is old data your browser keeps, called the cache. The cache is like a notebook where the browser saves pages to load them faster. The other is the File Manager preference settings.

Step 1: Reload and clear the browser cache

  1. Close the File Manager tab.
  2. Open your browser settings and find the option to clear browsing data.
  3. Choose Cached images and files. Leave other items alone if you want to stay logged in elsewhere.
  4. Click Clear data.
  5. Log in to cPanel again and open File Manager.

Step 2: Reset the File Manager preferences

  1. In File Manager, click Settings in the top right corner.
  2. Choose the folder to open first. The usual choice is Web Root (public_html/www).
  3. Untick Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) if you turned it on.
  4. Click Save.

Now File Manager starts the way it did when your account was new.

Step 3: Try a private window

  1. Open a private (incognito) window in your browser.
  2. Log in to cPanel there and open File Manager.
  3. If it works, a browser add-on or old data was the problem. Turn off add-ons one by one to find it.

Step 4: Try another browser

Try a different browser, such as another one installed on your computer. If it works there, update or reinstall your first browser.

Tip: Never delete files in your account just to fix File Manager. The tool and your files are separate. Your website stays safe while you troubleshoot.

If nothing helps

The problem may be on the server side. Hostvento support can check your account. Open a support ticket. Tell them what you see, which browser you use and what you already tried. A screenshot also helps.

Quick recap

  • Clear the browser cache and log in again.
  • Use Settings in File Manager to restore the default options.
  • Test in a private window or another browser.
  • Contact support if the problem stays.
