How to Fix "Failed to Retrieve Directory Listing" in FileZilla

This guide helps when FileZilla connects to your website but cannot show your files.

Files and FTP2 min read11 steps

What does the error mean?

FileZilla is a free program that moves files between your computer and your website using FTP. FTP is a set of rules for sending files over the internet.

A "directory listing" is just the list of files in a folder. The error means FileZilla logged in fine, but the list never arrived. It is like entering a shop but the staff will not show you what is on the shelves.

You usually see this:

Status: Connected
Command: LIST
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

Why it happens

FTP uses two paths. One path carries commands. The second path carries the data, like the file list. A firewall or a wrong mode often blocks the second path. Other causes are a very big folder, a wrong start folder or a blocked IP address.

Fix 1: Switch to passive mode

  1. Click Edit, then Settings.
  2. Open Connection, then FTP.
  3. Choose Passive (recommended).
  4. Click OK and reconnect.

If passive is already on, try Active instead.

Fix 2: Use the right encryption setting

  1. Click File, then Site Manager.
  2. Pick your site.
  3. Change Encryption to Require explicit FTP over TLS, or try Use plain FTP for a quick test only.
  4. Click Connect.

Fix 3: Check your firewall

Your computer firewall or antivirus may block FileZilla. Allow FileZilla in its settings. Your router, office or hotel network may also block FTP. Try your phone's hotspot to test.

Fix 4: Set the start folder

  1. In Site Manager, open the Advanced tab.
  2. In Default remote directory, type /public_html.
  3. Reconnect.

This tells FileZilla to start in your website folder.

Fix 5: Lower the number of connections

In Site Manager, open Transfer Settings. Tick Limit number of simultaneous connections and set the maximum to 1.

Tip: If many wrong logins happened, the server's firewall may have blocked your IP address. Ask Hostvento support to check. Tell them your public IP address.

If nothing works, open a support ticket and include the FileZilla log, with your password removed.

Quick recap

  • The login worked, but the data path was blocked.
  • Try passive mode first, then active.
  • Check encryption, firewall and network.
  • Set the default remote folder to /public_html.
  • Ask support if your IP address is blocked.
