Secure Ways to Transfer Data to Your Website

This guide explains the safe ways to move files between your computer and your hosting, and which ones to avoid.

Files and FTP2 min read5 steps

Why does it matter?

When you send a file over the internet, it passes through many computers. If it is not scrambled, someone could read it, like a postcard. Scrambling data is called encryption. Encrypted data is like a letter in a locked box. Only the receiver has the key.

Safe methods

SFTP

SFTP sends files through an SSH tunnel. SSH is a secure link between your computer and the server. It uses port 22 by default. Your password and files are both scrambled.

FTPS

FTPS is classic FTP with a security layer called SSL/TLS added. This layer scrambles the data. Many FTP programs support it. Look for an option such as "Require explicit FTP over TLS".

SCP

SCP is a simple command that copies files over SSH. It is good for quick copies.

HTTPS uploads

HTTPS is the secure version of a web address. Uploading in File Manager in cPanel through an address that starts with https is scrambled too.

Method to avoid

Plain FTP sends your user name, password and files in clear text. Anyone on the same network can read them. Avoid it, especially on public Wi-Fi.

Steps to use SFTP with FileZilla

  1. Open FileZilla, a free file transfer program.
  2. Click File, then Site Manager, then New Site.
  3. Choose SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol as the protocol.
  4. Type the host name, user name and password from your welcome email.
  5. Click Connect.

If SFTP does not connect, ask Hostvento support whether SSH access is on your plan.

Good habits

  • Use strong passwords.
  • Do not use public Wi-Fi for admin tasks.
  • Delete old FTP users you no longer need.
Tip: Open a ticket on the support page if you are unsure which method fits your plan.

Quick recap

  • Use SFTP, FTPS, SCP or HTTPS.
  • Avoid plain FTP.
  • Use strong passwords.
  • Ask support what your plan allows.
