First, what is cPanel?

cPanel is a control panel. A control panel is a dashboard for your hosting account. From it you can make email accounts, set up databases and manage files. cPanel is a third-party tool. Ask Hostvento support if it is part of your plan.

What is File Manager?

File Manager works like the folders on your computer. Instead of a program on your PC, it opens as a web page. You see all the files that make up your website: pages, pictures and settings.

Why people use it

  • You do not need to install any extra software.
  • You can upload a file in seconds.
  • You can fix a small mistake in a file right away.
  • You can unzip a big package on the server instead of uploading file by file.

What you can do

  • Upload and Download files.
  • Create new files and folders.
  • Copy, Move, Rename and Delete items.
  • Edit text files such as HTML or PHP.
  • Compress files into a zip and Extract zip files.
  • Change Permissions. Permissions say who may read, change or run a file.
  • Restore files from the Trash, if available.

How to open it

  1. Log in to cPanel using the link in your welcome email.
  2. Look for the Files section.
  3. Click File Manager.

Key folders

  • public_html: the files visitors see for your main website.
  • mail: where email data is kept.
  • logs: records of visits and errors, if present.

Warning: Do not delete a folder or file when you are unsure what it does. Back up first by clicking Compress and then Download.

Tip: For many files at once, an FTP program like FileZilla is faster than File Manager.
