Why Does the Firewall Block an IP Address?

If you suddenly cannot reach your website, email or FTP, a firewall may have blocked your IP address. This guide lists the usual reasons.

What is an IP block?

An IP address is a number that identifies your internet connection, like the street number of a house. A firewall is a guard that decides who may connect to the server. When it blocks an IP address, that address can no longer connect, even if the website is fine for everyone else.

Servers do this to protect themselves. The block is often automatic and often temporary.

Common reasons

  1. Too many wrong passwords. If you type a wrong password again and again for cPanel, FTP or email, the firewall thinks someone is guessing. This is called a brute-force attack.
  2. Too many requests. Loading pages very fast, or running a tool that checks your site often, can look like an attack.
  3. Old saved passwords. A mail app or FTP program that still has an old password keeps trying and failing in the background.
  4. Port scanning. A port is like a numbered door on a server. A scan tries many doors to see which are open. Firewalls block this.
  5. Bad rules triggered. A web application firewall may see something in a form post that looks like an attack and block you.
  6. A shared IP address. Other people on the same network or office share your address. If one of them misbehaves, all of you can be blocked.
  7. Infected computer or website. A virus can send spam or attacks in the background. The firewall then blocks that IP.
  8. Spam sending. Sending lots of email fast can put you on a block list.
  9. Blocked country or list. Some servers block whole countries or addresses on public bad lists.
  10. A manual block. An administrator may have added your IP on purpose.

What you can do

  1. Wait for a while. Many automatic blocks expire after some minutes or hours.
  2. Check that no app uses an old password. Update the saved password everywhere.
  3. Scan your computer for viruses.
  4. Try another network, such as mobile data, to confirm it is an IP block.
  5. Find your public IP address by searching "what is my IP" in a browser.
  6. Open a support ticket and send that IP address. Ask Hostvento support to check and unblock it.
Tip: If you manage the server yourself, check your firewall's block list for the IP. Then remove it. Also add your own IP to the allow list so you do not lock yourself out again.

Quick recap

  • A firewall blocks an IP address to protect the server.
  • Wrong passwords, fast requests and scans are common causes.
  • Old saved passwords can trigger blocks silently.
  • Wait, clean up, then ask support with your IP address.
