Why prices differ
Hosting is not one-size-fits-all. A small blog and a busy online store need very different servers. Prices depend on:
- Resources. RAM, storage, CPU and bandwidth.
- Extra services. Backups, support, security tools.
- Management level. Managed hosting includes server updates, security patches and tuning, so it costs more. Unmanaged hosting costs less, but you do the server work.
Prices have also gone up in the industry. Server memory, SSD storage, electricity and software licenses all became more costly, and many providers changed their prices. Looking at what a plan includes helps more than looking at the lowest advertised price.
Typical prices
| Type | Typical price per month | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | about $3 to $16 | Blogs, portfolios, small business sites |
| Basic WordPress hosting | about $3 to $10 | Small WordPress sites |
| Managed WordPress hosting | about $20 to $80 | Business sites that want speed, security and support |
| VPS hosting | about $10 to $100 | Growing sites, developers, apps |
| Dedicated server | about $80 to $500 | Large sites, stores, heavy apps |
| Cloud hosting | from about $10, up to $100-$200 or more | Sites with changing traffic |
Shared hosting
Many sites share one server. It is cheap and the most popular choice for beginners. Compare the first price and the renewal price. A low start price often rises at the first renewal. Because resources are shared, a busy neighbor can slow you down.
WordPress hosting
Basic WordPress plans cost about as much as shared hosting. Managed WordPress plans add advanced caching, malware protection, staging sites and WordPress experts. They cost more, but save time.
VPS hosting
A VPS splits a physical server into private virtual servers with their own resources. It offers better and steadier performance, more control and room to grow. It is a good step up when shared hosting is no longer enough.
Dedicated hosting
You get a whole physical server. It gives the best performance, control and security. A fully managed dedicated server costs more, because the provider also takes care of maintenance, security and monitoring.
Cloud hosting
Your site runs on a network of servers and scales with demand. Many cloud plans use pay-as-you-go prices. Watch your usage: unused resources and auto-scaling can make the bill hard to predict.
Other costs to plan for
- Domain names
- SSL certificates (many hosts include a free one)
- Security tools and malware scans
- Migration services
- Premium backups
- CDN
- Business email
- Management tools
Also look at the renewal price.
Billing cycles
- Monthly plans are flexible but cost more per month.
- Annual or multi-year plans cost less per month but need an upfront payment.
Before you commit to a long plan, compare the renewal price and what is included.
Choosing a plan
- Estimate your traffic and the size of your site.
- Pick the lowest type that gives you what you need, for example shared for a blog and VPS for an app.
- Compare the full cost over time, not only the first month.
- Make sure you can upgrade later.
Quick recap
- Prices go from a few dollars to hundreds a month.
- Compare renewal prices and extras.
- Start small and upgrade when your site grows.
