What is two-factor authentication?
Two-factor authentication, or 2FA, means you prove who you are in two ways. The first is your password. The second is a short code from your phone that changes every 30 seconds or so.
It is like a door with two locks. Even if a thief learns your password, they still lack the code on your phone.
What you need
- A smartphone.
- An authenticator app. This is a free app that makes the codes. Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and Authy are common ones.
Steps
- Install an authenticator app on your phone.
- Go to https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php and log in.
- Click your name near the top right.
- Click Security Settings. In some versions it is named Two-Factor Authentication.
- Click Click here to Enable or a similar button.
- Choose the authenticator app option if you are given a choice.
- A QR code appears. A QR code is a square picture that your phone can scan.
- Open the app on your phone. Tap the plus sign, then choose to scan a QR code.
- Point the camera at the code on your screen.
- The app shows a six-digit code. Type it into the box on the page.
- Click Submit.
- If a backup code is shown, copy it and keep it safe.
The menu names can change in newer versions. Look around the account menu if you do not see the same words.
How logging in works afterwards
- Enter your email and password as usual.
- The site asks for a code.
- Open the app and type the current code.
Tip: Store your backup code somewhere safe, such as a locked drawer. It helps if you lose your phone.
If you lose access, open a support ticket.
Quick recap
- 2FA adds a code from your phone to your login.
- Install an authenticator app first.
- Enable it under your account's security settings.
