Fix Errors When Installing an App with Softaculous

This guide helps you find out why a Softaculous install fails and how to fix the most common causes.

What is Softaculous?

Softaculous is a tool inside cPanel that installs apps like WordPress, Joomla and many others with a few clicks. cPanel is the control panel where you manage your hosting. Sometimes the install stops and shows a red error message. The message usually tells you what is wrong.

Step 1: Read the error

Write down the exact words of the message. Different words have different fixes. Then check the list below.

Common errors and fixes

The folder is not empty

Softaculous will not install over existing files. There may be an old file like index.html or a half-finished install.

  1. Log in to cPanel and open File Manager.
  2. Open the folder you chose, often public_html.
  3. Back up anything you want to keep. Deleting files cannot be undone.
  4. Delete the old files or move them to another folder.
  5. Run the install again.

Database errors

Most apps keep their data in a database. A database is an organized store for the information of your site. Errors can happen if you have reached the limit of databases, or an old database from a failed try uses the same name.

  1. In cPanel, open Manage My Databases (or MySQL Databases).
  2. Delete old databases that you no longer need, after you check they are not in use.
  3. Try the install again.

Disk space or limit errors

If your account is full, the app cannot be copied. In cPanel, check Disk Usage. Delete files you do not need, or ask Hostvento support about your limits.

Domain or path problems

  • Check that you picked the correct domain in the install form.
  • Leave the In Directory box empty to install in the main folder. Type a folder name to install in a sub-folder.
  • Make sure the domain points to your hosting.

Timeouts

If the page stops partway, the server may be busy. Wait a few minutes and try again.

Passwords and names

Use simple admin names and a strong password. Some symbols may cause trouble. Try a password made of letters and numbers.

Tip: If it still fails, open a support ticket and include the exact error text and the app name.

Quick recap

  • Read the exact error message.
  • Clear old files and old databases after a backup.
  • Check disk space, domain and folder name.
  • Try again, and contact support with the error text if needed.
