Why should you upgrade?
Softaculous is a tool in cPanel that installs website apps. App makers release new versions to fix bugs and close security holes. A security hole is a weak spot that bad people can use to break into a site. Running an old version is like leaving a door unlocked.
Warning: An upgrade can sometimes break a theme or plugin. A plugin is a small add-on that gives a site extra features. Take a backup before you start.
Steps
- Log in to your Hostvento client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
- Open Services, choose your hosting plan and log in to cPanel.
- Open Softaculous Apps Installer.
- Click All Installations.
- Look for an upgrade icon next to the app. It often looks like an arrow pointing up. Softaculous shows it only when a newer version exists.
- Click the upgrade icon.
- Tick Backup Installation Data if it is offered. This makes a safety copy before the change.
- Read the notes on the screen. They may warn about themes or plugins.
- Click Upgrade Installation.
- Wait until the process ends. Do not close the page.
Check your site after the upgrade
- Open your website in a new browser tab.
- Click through a few pages.
- Log in to the admin area and make sure it works.
If something looks wrong
Do not panic. Softaculous kept a backup if you ticked the box. You can restore it:
- Go back to All Installations.
- Open the Backups area. The name can vary a little by version.
- Pick the backup from before the upgrade.
- Click Restore.
Turn on automatic updates
Some Softaculous versions let you choose automatic updates when you edit an install. Look on the edit page for an option about updates. Not every plan has this. Ask Hostvento support if you cannot find it.
Tip: Update themes and plugins too. Old ones can cause problems even when the main app is current.
Quick recap
- Upgrades fix bugs and make your site safer.
- Open All Installations and click the upgrade arrow.
- Tick the backup box before you start.
- Check your site once the upgrade ends.
- Restore the backup if something breaks.
