What is WooCommerce?
WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress. A plugin is an add-on that gives your site new powers. WooCommerce turns a normal WordPress site into an online shop. It handles products, a shopping cart and orders.
You need WooCommerce installed and set up before you start. A "simple product" is a single item with one price, like a book or a mug. This guide adds one.
Steps
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
- On the left menu, click Products, then Add New.
- Type the product name in the title box at the top. Use a clear name, like "Blue Coffee Mug".
- Write a full description in the main box. Say what the item is, its size and what it is made of.
- Scroll down to the Product data box. Make sure the drop-down says Simple product.
- In the General tab, type the Regular price. If you want a sale, type a Sale price too.
- Open the Inventory tab. Type a SKU if you use one. A SKU is a short code that identifies a product, like a barcode number.
- Tick Manage stock? if you want WooCommerce to count how many are left. Then type the Stock quantity.
- Open the Shipping tab. Enter the weight and size. These help to work out shipping costs.
- Scroll down to Product short description. Write two or three lines. These show near the top of the product page.
- On the right, find Product categories. Tick a category or click Add new category. Categories are like shelves in a shop. They help buyers find things.
- Find Product image and click Set product image. Upload your main photo and click Set product image again.
- Under Product gallery, click Add product gallery images to add more photos.
- Click Publish at the top right.
Click View product to see how it looks to buyers.
Tip: Not ready to show the product yet? Click Save Draft instead of Publish. A draft is hidden from visitors until you publish it.
Other product types
The Product data drop-down has other types. A Variable product has choices, like sizes or colors. A Grouped product bundles related items. An External/Affiliate product links to another site. Pick the one that fits.
Quick recap
- Go to Products, then Add New.
- Enter a name, description, price and stock details.
- Add a category and a product image.
- Click Publish to put it in your shop, or Save Draft to wait.
