What is web hosting?
Web hosting is a rented space on a computer that is always on and always connected to the internet. That computer is called a server. Your website files live on it. When someone types your address, the server sends them your pages. Hosting is like renting a shop in a busy street. Your website is the goods inside.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is free software for building websites. It needs a place to run. That place can be a hosting account, your own computer, or a service that runs it for you.
Your choices
Option 1: Build on your own computer
You can install WordPress on your own computer for free. People do this to practice, or to build a site before it goes live. Tools such as Local or XAMPP set up a mini server on your machine. This is called a local site.
The catch is that only you can see it. Nobody else on the internet can visit it. Also, it stops when you turn off your computer.
Option 2: Use a service that runs WordPress for you
Some companies offer free sites that run on their servers. They are fine for a hobby. But you give up much control. You often cannot install your own plugins or themes. A plugin is an add-on that gives your site new features. A theme is the design of your site. These services may also show their own ads or their name in your address.
Option 3: Use web hosting
This is the usual route for a real website. You get full control. You can install any plugin or theme. You can use your own domain name, such as yourname.com. A domain name is your website's street address.
