Fix the 500 Internal Server Error in WordPress

This guide helps you find and fix the "500 Internal Server Error" on your WordPress site.

What is a 500 error?

A 500 Internal Server Error means something went wrong on the server, but the server cannot say what. It is like a shop worker saying "there is a problem" without telling you which one. In WordPress, the usual causes are a broken .htaccess file, a bad plugin or theme, or too little PHP memory. PHP is the language WordPress runs on.

Warning: Take a backup before you change files. A backup is a saved copy of your site.

Fix 1: Reset the .htaccess file

The .htaccess file is a hidden settings file that controls web addresses. A bad rule inside it is a very common cause.

  1. Log in to your hosting control panel.
  2. Open File Manager.
  3. Go to your WordPress folder, often public_html.
  4. Turn on Show Hidden Files.
  5. Rename .htaccess to .htaccess-old.
  6. Open your site. If it works, the file was the problem.
  7. In WordPress, click Settings, then Permalinks, then Save Changes to make a clean file.

Fix 2: Turn off all plugins

A plugin is an add-on program. If you cannot reach the dashboard, use the File Manager.

  1. Open wp-content in the File Manager.
  2. Rename the plugins folder to plugins-off.
  3. Check your site.
  4. If it works, rename the folder back to plugins.
  5. In the dashboard, turn plugins on one by one until the error comes back. The last one is the bad plugin.

Fix 3: Switch to a default theme

  1. Open wp-content/themes.
  2. Rename the folder of your active theme, for example add -off.
  3. WordPress falls back to a default theme if one is installed.
  4. Check your site.

Fix 4: Raise the PHP memory limit

  1. Open wp-config.php in the File Manager.
  2. Add this line above the text "That's all, stop editing".
  3. Save the file.
define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');

This lets WordPress use more memory. The hosting plan may cap the limit, so ask Hostvento support if it does not help.

Fix 5: Check your error log

An error log is a file that records problems. Look for error_log in your site folder, or the Errors tool in your control panel. The last lines often name the exact file that failed.
