Fix "Is its parent directory writable by the server?"

This guide helps you fix the WordPress error that appears when you upload a picture, theme or plugin.

What does the error mean?

The full message looks like "Unable to create directory ... Is its parent directory writable by the server?". A directory is just another word for a folder. WordPress tried to make a new folder to save your file, but the server said no. The server did not give it permission. Permissions are rules about who may read or change a file. It is like a locked drawer that WordPress cannot open.

Common causes are wrong folder permissions, the wrong owner of the files, a full disk or a wrong upload path.

Warning: Do not set folders to 777. That lets anyone write to them, which is unsafe. Take a backup before you change settings.

Step 1: Check your disk space

  1. Log in to your hosting control panel.
  2. Look for the disk usage figure.
  3. If the space is full, delete files you do not need or ask Hostvento support about your plan.

Step 2: Fix the permissions

Safe numbers are 755 for folders and 644 for files.

  1. Open File Manager in your control panel.
  2. Go to your WordPress folder, often public_html.
  3. Open wp-content.
  4. Right-click the uploads folder.
  5. Choose Change Permissions (or Permissions).
  6. Set the number to 755.
  7. Tick the option to apply it to sub-folders if the panel offers it.
  8. Click Change Permissions to save.

If you use FTP, right-click the folder in your FTP program and choose File permissions. FTP moves files between your computer and your hosting account.

Step 3: Create the folder by hand

If wp-content/uploads does not exist, make it.

  1. In File Manager, open wp-content.
  2. Click New Folder.
  3. Name it uploads.
  4. Set its permission to 755.

Step 4: Check the upload path

Older sites may keep a wrong folder path in the settings. Add this line to wp-config.php above the text "That's all, stop editing". Download a copy of the file first.

define('UPLOADS', 'wp-content/uploads');

This tells WordPress where to save uploads.

Step 5: Ask support about ownership

Files must belong to your hosting user. If you moved files with a root account or a restore, the owner can be wrong. You cannot fix that from WordPress. Open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.

Quick recap

  • The error means WordPress cannot write to a folder.
  • Check free disk space first.
  • Set folders to 755 and files to 644. Never use 777.
  • Make sure wp-content/uploads exists.
  • Ask support if file ownership is wrong.
