How to Add a File Upload Field to a WooCommerce Product

This guide shows you how to let customers upload a file, such as a photo, when they order a product.

What is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress site into an online shop. A plugin is an add-on that gives your site a new feature.

WooCommerce does not have an upload box on product pages by default. Some shops need one. A print shop may ask for a logo. A gift shop may ask for a photo. You add the box with another plugin.

Steps

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Go to Plugins and click Add New.
  3. Search for a plugin that adds product fields or file uploads. Look for words like "product add-ons" or "file upload for WooCommerce".
  4. Read the plugin description. Check that it has good reviews and was updated recently.
  5. Click Install Now, then Activate.
  6. Go to Products and click Edit under the product you want.
  7. Scroll down to the new settings box that the plugin added.
  8. Click the button to add a new field. Choose the type File upload.
  9. Type a label, such as "Upload your logo".
  10. Choose which file types are allowed, such as JPG or PNG.
  11. Set a size limit for files.
  12. Click Update to save the product.
  13. Open the product page on your site and check that the upload box shows.

Settings names differ from plugin to plugin. Follow the plugin's own screen if a label looks different.

Test it

  1. Add the product to the cart as a customer would.
  2. Upload a small test file.
  3. Place a test order.
  4. Open the order in WooCommerce and then Orders. Look for the uploaded file.
Tip: Only allow safe file types. Do not allow types like PHP. Bad files can harm your site. Your hosting plan may also limit upload size. Ask Hostvento support if large files fail.

Quick recap

  • WooCommerce has no upload field by default.
