How to Add a New Product Category in WooCommerce

What is a product category?

WooCommerce is a free plugin that makes a WordPress site into an online shop. A category is a group name for products. In a clothes shop, the categories may be Shirts, Shoes and Hats. It works like shelves in a real store.

Steps

1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard. This is the admin area of your site.
2. On the left menu, click Products.
3. Click Categories.
4. In the Name box, type the category name, such as "Shoes".
5. Look at the Slug box. A slug is the part of the web address that names the category. You can leave it empty. WordPress fills it in.
6. If this is a sub-category, pick a Parent category. For example, "Running shoes" can sit inside "Shoes". If not, leave it as None.
7. Write a short text in Description if you like.
8. Choose a Display type. The default is fine for most shops.
9. Click Upload/Add image if you want a picture for the category.
10. Click Add new category.

The new category now shows in the table on the right.

Put a product in the category

1. Go to Products and then All Products.
2. Click Edit under a product.
3. Find the Product categories box on the right.
4. Tick the box next to your new category.
5. Click Update.

Show categories in your menu

1. Go to Appearance and then Menus.
2. Open Product categories on the left. If you cannot see it, click Screen Options at the top and turn it on.
3. Tick your category and click Add to Menu.
4. Click Save Menu.

Quick recap
