How to Change the Currency in WooCommerce

This guide shows you how to change the money type your online shop uses, such as dollars or euros.

What is the currency setting?

WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress site into an online shop. A plugin is an add-on that gives your site a new feature. The currency setting tells the shop which money to show on prices.

Changing it only changes the symbol and format. It does not convert prices. If a product costs 10 in dollars and you switch to euros, it will show 10 euros. You must set new prices yourself.

Steps

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. On the left, click WooCommerce.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Stay on the General tab.
  5. Scroll down to Currency options.
  6. Open the Currency drop-down list.
  7. Pick the currency you want. You can type its name to search.
  8. Choose the Currency position. This decides if the symbol shows before or after the price.
  9. Set the Thousand separator. This is the mark between thousands, such as a comma.
  10. Set the Decimal separator. This is the mark before cents, such as a dot.
  11. Set the Number of decimals. Most shops use 2.
  12. Scroll to the bottom and click Save changes.

Check your shop

  1. Open a product page on your site.
  2. Look at the price. Check that the symbol is right.
  3. Open your cart and checkout to be sure.
Tip: Your payment provider must accept the new currency. If it does not, checkout may fail. Check the provider's settings or help page. Also change prices on all products before you reopen the shop.

Want to show many currencies?

WooCommerce lets one currency be the base. To show visitors prices in several currencies, you need a currency switcher plugin. Install it from Plugins and Add New.

Quick recap

  • Go to WooCommerce, Settings, General.
  • Pick a new value in the Currency list.
  • Click Save changes.
  • Prices do not convert on their own. Update them by hand.
