Why does the version matter?
A version is a number that tells you how new the software is. For example, 6.5. Newer versions fix bugs and close security holes. Plugins and themes also need a version that matches. Support staff will often ask for your version when you need help.
Method 1: the dashboard
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard. This is the admin area of your site.
- Scroll to the very bottom of any page.
- Look at the bottom right corner. You will see the text "Version" and a number.
Method 2: the Updates page
- Go to Dashboard and click Updates.
- Read the line that says "You have the latest version of WordPress".
- The version number is shown beside it.
Method 3: Site Health
- Go to Tools and click Site Health.
- Click the Info tab.
- Open the WordPress section.
- Find the line named Version.
Method 4: the At a Glance box
On the dashboard home page, find the box named At a Glance. It lists the WordPress version and your theme name.
Method 5: cPanel file manager
Use this if you cannot log in.
- Log in to your client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php and open cPanel.
- Click File Manager.
- Open the folder where WordPress lives, often
public_html. - Open the folder
wp-includes. - Right-click the file
version.phpand choose View or Edit. - Find the line that starts with
$wp_version. The number after it is your version.
Do not change anything in this file. Close it when you are done.
Method 6: the readme file
Type your site address followed by /readme.html in the browser. Some sites remove this file for safety.
Tip: If your version is old, make a backup. Then go to Dashboard and Updates and click Update Now.
