What is a tagline?
A tagline is a short phrase that says what your site is about. It is like a slogan. Many themes show it under the site title. Search engines may also show it in results.
New WordPress sites start with a default tagline, such as "Just another WordPress site". You should change this to something useful.
Method 1: Settings
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Click Settings on the left.
- Click General.
- Find the box named Tagline.
- Delete the old words.
- Type your new tagline. Keep it short, such as "Fresh bread baked daily".
- Scroll down and click Save Changes.
Method 2: the Customizer
- Go to Appearance and click Customize.
- Click Site Identity.
- Find the Tagline box.
- Type your new tagline and watch the preview change.
- Click Publish.
Method 3: the Site Editor
Block themes use this way.
- Go to Appearance and click Editor.
- Open the header and click the Site Tagline block.
- Type the new words.
- Click Save.
If you want no tagline
You can leave the box empty. Then WordPress shows nothing. Some themes also let you hide it in their own settings.
Check the result
- Open your site in a new tab.
- Reload the page.
- Look under the site title.
If you still see the old words, clear your cache. A cache is a saved copy of your pages that makes them load faster. Clear any cache plugin, then reload.
Tip: Use plain words that tell visitors what you do. Aim for fewer than ten words.
Quick recap
- The tagline is a short line about your site.
- Edit it under Settings and General.
- Click Save Changes.
- Clear the cache if the old one still shows.
