How to Add a Video to a WordPress Post or Page

This guide shows you how to put a video on your page, either from YouTube or from your own computer.

Two ways to add a video

Embedding means showing a video that lives on another site, such as YouTube or Vimeo. The video plays on your page, but the file stays on the other site. This is the best choice for most people. It saves space on your hosting and keeps your site fast.

You can also upload a video file to your own site. Video files are big, so use this for short clips only.

Embed a video from YouTube

  1. Open the video on YouTube.
  2. Click the address bar of your browser and copy the web address.
  3. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  4. Open the post or page where you want the video.
  5. Click the plus sign to add a block. A block is one piece of content in the editor.
  6. Search for YouTube and click the block. You can also use the general Embed block.
  7. Paste the address into the box.
  8. Click Embed.
  9. Click Publish or Update.

Shortcut: paste the video address on an empty line in the editor. WordPress turns it into a player by itself.

Upload your own video

  1. In the editor, click the plus sign.
  2. Search for Video and click the block.
  3. Click Upload and pick the file from your computer. MP4 is the best format.
  4. Or click Media Library to use a video you already uploaded.
  5. Use the settings on the right to turn on options like Loop or Muted.
  6. Click Publish or Update.

If the upload fails, the file may be too large. Ask Hostvento support about the limits on your plan. Open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.

Check it

  1. Click Preview.
  2. Press play and see that the video works.
  3. Look at it on a phone too.
Tip: Only embed videos you have the right to share. Keep one or two videos per page so it loads quickly.

Quick recap

  • Embedding shows a video from YouTube or Vimeo on your page.
  • Copy the video address and paste it into an Embed block.
  • Use the Video block to upload a short MP4 file.
