How to Open a .wpress Backup File

The All-in-One WP Migration plugin saves your site in one file ending in .wpress. This guide shows you how to look inside that file.

What is a .wpress file?

A plugin is a small add-on that gives WordPress new powers. All-in-One WP Migration is a plugin that packs your whole site into a single file. That file ends in .wpress.

It is not a normal ZIP file. If you double-click it, your computer will not know what to do. You need a special tool to unpack it. Unpacking is also called extracting.

Why would you extract it?

  • You want to grab one image or one theme from the backup.
  • You want to check what is inside before you restore it.
  • You cannot restore the whole site, but you still need your files.

Option 1: Restore it with the plugin

If you only want your site back, you do not need to extract anything. The plugin can import the file for you.

  1. Install a fresh WordPress site.
  2. Log in to the WordPress dashboard. This is your site's control room.
  3. Go to Plugins, then Add New.
  4. Search for All-in-One WP Migration. Click Install Now, then Activate.
  5. Go to All-in-One WP Migration, then Import.
  6. Choose Import From, then File, and pick your .wpress file.
Warning: Importing replaces the current site content. Take a backup of the site first.

Option 2: Extract it with a free tool

Several free tools can unpack .wpress files. Some are small programs for your computer. Some are command line tools. A command line is a window where you type short instructions instead of clicking.

The steps below describe the general idea. The exact tool name and commands depend on what you pick, so follow the instructions that come with your tool.

  1. Download a trusted .wpress extractor from its official page.
  2. Make a new empty folder. Name it something like my-site-files.
  3. Copy your .wpress file into a safe place on your computer. Keep the original untouched.
  4. Open the extractor and point it at your .wpress file.
  5. Choose the empty folder as the place to save the files.
  6. Start the extraction and wait until it finishes.

What you will see afterwards

The folder will contain your site pieces. You will usually find a database.sql file. A database is where WordPress stores your posts and settings. You will also find folders such as uploads, plugins and themes. The uploads folder holds your pictures.

Tip: Only use tools from sources you trust. If you are unsure, ask Hostvento support through a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.
