How to Fix a Blank White Page in WordPress

Sometimes your WordPress site shows only a white screen. This guide helps you find the cause and fix it step by step.

What is the blank page problem?

People call it the "white screen of death". Your page loads, but nothing shows. No words, no error. It is like a TV that is on but shows no picture.

The cause is usually a PHP error. PHP is the language WordPress is written in. When PHP breaks, WordPress can hide the error and show a blank page. Common causes are a bad plugin, a bad theme, or not enough memory.

Warning: Take a backup of your files and database before you change anything.

Step 1: Turn on error messages

You need WordPress to tell you what is wrong.

  1. Log in to your client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php and open your hosting service.
  2. Open File Manager in your control panel.
  3. Go to the folder that holds your site. It is often called public_html.
  4. Find the file wp-config.php and open it with the editor.
  5. Find the line that says define( 'WP_DEBUG', false );.
  6. Change false to true and save the file.
  7. Reload your site. You should now see an error message.

The message usually names a plugin or theme file. That is your clue.

Step 2: Switch off all plugins

A plugin is an add-on that gives WordPress extra features. A faulty one is the top cause of white screens.

  1. In File Manager, open wp-content.
  2. Right-click the plugins folder and choose Rename.
  3. Rename it to plugins-old.
  4. Reload your site.

If the site comes back, one plugin is the problem. Rename the folder back to plugins. Then rename each plugin folder inside it, one at a time, until the site breaks again. That plugin is the culprit.

Step 3: Switch to a default theme

A theme controls how your site looks. If plugins are not the cause, try this.

  1. Open wp-content/themes.
  2. Rename your active theme folder, for example to mytheme-old.
  3. WordPress will fall back to a default theme if one is installed.
  4. Reload your site.

Step 4: Raise the memory limit

  1. Open wp-config.php again.
  2. Add this line above the text "That's all, stop editing":
define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );

This lets WordPress use more memory. Save and reload.

Tip: When you are done, set WP_DEBUG back to false. Visitors should not see error messages. If nothing works, open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.

Quick recap

  • A blank page means a hidden PHP error.
  • Turn on WP_DEBUG to see the error.
  • Rename the plugins folder to test plugins.
  • Try a default theme and a higher memory limit.
  • Always take a backup first.
