What is an RSS feed?
An RSS feed is a list of your newest posts, written in a form that computers can read. People use feed readers to follow sites they like. It works like a newspaper subscription for websites.
Your feed lives at an address like https://yourdomain.com/feed/. A common error is "XML parsing error: XML or text declaration not at start of entity". It means something extra sits in front of the feed. Often this is a blank space or blank line.
Warning: Take a backup of your site before you edit any files.
Step 1: See the error
- Open your feed address in a browser.
- Read the message. It often names a file and a line number.
Step 2: Remove extra spaces in wp-config.php
- Log in to your client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php and open your hosting control panel.
- Open File Manager and go to your site folder, often
public_html. - Open
wp-config.phpwith the editor. - Make sure the file starts with
<?phpon the very first line. There must be no empty line or space before it. - Look at the very end. If there is a closing
?>, delete it, and delete any blank lines after it. - Save the file and reload the feed.
Step 3: Check your theme's functions.php
A theme controls how your site looks. Its functions.php file can also have stray spaces.
- Go to
wp-content/themesand open your active theme folder. - Edit
functions.php. - Remove any blank lines before the opening
<?phpand after any closing?>. - Save and test the feed.
Step 4: Turn off plugins
A plugin is an add-on that gives WordPress new features. One may be breaking the feed.
- Log in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Plugins, then Installed Plugins.
- Select all and choose Deactivate from the bulk actions.
- Check the feed. If it works, turn the plugins back on one by one until it breaks again.
Step 5: Reset permalinks
- Go to Settings, then Permalinks.
- Click Save Changes without changing anything.
- Test the feed again.
Tip: Special characters in a post, such as odd symbols, can also break a feed. If only one post causes trouble, edit that post. If you are stuck, open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.
Quick recap
- An RSS feed is a machine-readable list of your newest posts.
- Most errors come from stray spaces in PHP files.
- Check wp-config.php and functions.php.
- Test by turning plugins off and saving permalinks.
- Back up before editing files.
