What is a title tag?
A title tag is a line of text that names a web page. You see it on the browser tab. Search engines also show it as the blue headline in results. A clear title helps people decide to click.
There are two kinds to know. The site title is the name of your whole site. The page title is the name of one post or page.
Change the site title and tagline
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Settings, then General.
- Edit Site Title. This is your site name.
- Edit Tagline. This is a short line about your site.
- Click Save Changes.
Many themes use these two for your home page title.
Change the title of one post or page
- Go to Posts or Pages.
- Click the one you want to edit.
- Change the title at the top.
- Click Update.
By default, WordPress uses this title for the title tag. If you change the title, the web address may stay the same.
Use an SEO plugin for full control
SEO means helping search engines understand your site. A plugin is an add-on for WordPress. SEO plugins let you write a special title tag that differs from the page title.
- Go to Plugins, then Add New Plugin.
- Search for an SEO plugin and install and activate it.
- Open the post or page you want.
- Scroll to the SEO box under the editor, or open the SEO panel in the sidebar.
- Find the field named SEO title.
- Type your new title.
- Click Update.
Most SEO plugins also let you set a pattern for all pages in their settings.
Tips for good titles
- Keep them short, about 50 to 60 characters. Longer ones may be cut off.
- Put the main idea first.
- Make each title different.
- Write for people, not for robots.
Check your change
- Open the page in your browser.
- Look at the tab to see the new title.
Search engines may take days or weeks to show the new title.
Quick recap
- The title tag is the name shown in tabs and search results.
- Change the site title in Settings, then General.
- Edit a post title in the editor.
- Use an SEO plugin for a custom title tag.
