What does this message mean?
After a WordPress update, you may see a screen called Database Update Required. WordPress compares the database version with the file version. If both match, it says that no update is required. It is like checking a library list and finding that every book is already there.
Usually this message is harmless. Sometimes it shows up in a loop, or WordPress says it is up to date when you know a new version is out. The steps below cover both cases.
Fix 1: Clear the caches
A cache is a saved copy of a page. An old copy can show old news about updates.
- Clear your browser cache and cookies.
- Clear your site cache in any caching plugin.
- Reload
/wp-admin.
Fix 2: Force a fresh update check
- Go to Dashboard, then Updates.
- Click Check Again.
- If a new version appears, click Update Now.
Fix 3: Turn off plugins
A plugin can block the update check.
- Open File Manager in your control panel.
- Go to
wp-content. - Rename the
pluginsfolder toplugins-off. - Reload
/wp-adminand run the update again. - Rename the folder back to
plugins. - Activate your plugins one by one to find the one that causes the problem.
Fix 4: Check file permissions
If WordPress cannot write to its folders, an update can fail. Folders are normally set to 755 and files to 644. In File Manager, right-click an item and choose Change Permissions to check. Ask Hostvento support if you are not sure.
Fix 5: Update by hand
- Download the newest WordPress zip from wordpress.org.
- Unzip it on your computer.
- Delete the
wp-contentfolder and thewp-config.phpfile from the unzipped copy. This protects your content and settings. - Upload the rest of the files to your site folder, replacing the old ones.
- Visit
/wp-adminand accept the database update if asked.
Check the version
Click the WordPress logo at the top left of the dashboard and then About WordPress. You see your current version there.
Quick recap
- "No update required" often just means you are already current.
- Clear caches and click Check Again first.
- Test with plugins off if it keeps happening.
- As a last step, update by hand, but never overwrite
wp-contentorwp-config.php.
