What is an Internal Server Error?

A server is the computer that holds your website. This error means something went wrong on that computer, but it cannot say what. It is like a shop worker saying "there is a problem" without telling you which one.

500 Server Error

In WordPress the usual causes are a broken .htaccess file, a bad plugin or theme, low memory, or damaged core files.

Warning: Take a backup of your files before you start.

Step 1: Check the .htaccess file

The .htaccess file holds rules for how your site works. A wrong rule can stop the whole site.

  1. Log in to your hosting control panel and open File Manager.
  2. Open the folder where WordPress lives. This is often public_html.
  3. Turn on hidden files if you cannot see .htaccess. Look for a Show Hidden Files setting.
  4. Rename .htaccess to .htaccess_old.
  5. Reload your website.
  6. If the site works, log in to WordPress. Go to Settings, then Permalinks, and click Save Changes. WordPress makes a fresh file.

Step 2: Turn off plugins

A plugin is an add-on that gives your site a new feature. A faulty one can cause the error.

  1. In File Manager, open wp-content.
  2. Rename the plugins folder to plugins_old.
  3. Reload your site. If it works, a plugin is the cause.
  4. Rename the folder back to plugins.
  5. Log in and turn plugins on one at a time to find the bad one.

Step 3: Check the theme

A theme controls how your site looks. In wp-content/themes, rename your active theme's folder. WordPress will switch to a default theme if one is installed. Reload the site to test.

Step 4: Raise the memory limit

Memory is the working space your site uses. Open wp-config.php and add this line above the text that says "That's all, stop editing":

define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );

This asks WordPress to use up to 256 MB of memory. Your plan may set its own limit.

Step 5: Replace core files

Download a fresh copy of WordPress from wordpress.org. Upload only the wp-admin and wp-includes folders to replace the old ones. Do not touch wp-content.

Tip: Still stuck? Look at your error log, or open a support ticket.

Quick recap

  • The 500 error is a general server problem.
  • Rename .htaccess first.
  • Then test plugins, theme and memory.
  • Replace wp-admin and wp-includes if needed.
  • Always keep a backup.
