What is a framework?
A framework is a ready-made base for building something. Think of a house frame. The walls and roof shape are ready. You choose the paint and the furniture. In the same way, a framework gives developers a base of code so they do not start from nothing.
WordPress as a CMS
WordPress is mostly called a CMS. CMS stands for content management system. It is a tool that lets you add and change pages without writing code. You type in a box, press a button and the page is live.
Behind the scenes, WordPress is written in PHP and stores data in a MySQL or MariaDB database. PHP is a programming language that runs on the server. A database is a digital notebook for your posts, users and settings.
The main parts
- Core is the main WordPress software. It handles logins, posts and pages.
- Themes control the look of your site, such as colors and layout.
- Plugins add features, such as contact forms or a shop.
- Hooks are special spots in the code where plugins and themes can attach their own actions. They let you change things without editing the core.
- The REST API lets other apps talk to your site.
Where the files live
Inside your WordPress folder you will see three main places:
wp-adminholds the dashboard code.wp-includesholds the core tools.wp-contentholds your themes, plugins and uploads. This is the folder that is yours.
The file wp-config.php holds your database details.
What is a theme framework?
A theme framework is a special parent theme with many built-in options. A developer builds a child theme on top of it. A child theme is a small theme that borrows from a parent theme. This saves time and keeps changes safe when the parent updates.
Is WordPress a true framework?
It is not a strict framework like some others. But it has many framework features. It has hooks, templates and an API, so developers can build almost anything on it.

Quick recap
- A framework is a ready base for building.
- WordPress is a CMS with framework-like features.
- Core, themes and plugins work together.
- Hooks let you change behavior without touching the core.
