What is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress. A plugin is an add-on that gives a site a new ability. WooCommerce turns a normal WordPress site into an online shop. It handles products, a cart, checkout and orders.

The checklist

1. A domain name

A domain name is your shop's address, such as myshop.com. Pick something short and easy to spell.

2. Web hosting

Hosting is the rented space on a server where your shop lives. A shop needs enough power for many visitors and for a growing product list. Check which plan fits your needs, or ask Hostvento support.

3. WordPress

WooCommerce needs WordPress. Many hosts can install it for you in a few clicks. Ask support if you need help.

4. An SSL certificate

SSL makes your site use https, the safe version of a web address. Shoppers type personal details, so it is a must. Browsers show a padlock when SSL works.

5. A theme

A theme sets the look of your site. Pick one that says it supports WooCommerce.

6. Products

Prepare clear photos, names, descriptions and prices for each item. Decide on stock numbers too.

7. A way to get paid

You need a payment gateway. This is a service that takes card or online payments safely. Pick a gateway that works in your country. You will need to open an account with that provider.

8. A shipping plan

If you send physical goods, decide where you ship and what it costs. WooCommerce has shipping zones for this.

9. Legal pages

Write a privacy policy, terms and a returns policy. Rules depend on your country, so check what applies to you.

Basic setup steps

  1. Install WordPress on your hosting.
  2. Log in to the dashboard.
  3. Go to Plugins and then Add New.
  4. Search for WooCommerce, then click Install Now and Activate.
  5. Follow the setup wizard. Add your shop address, currency and payment options.
  6. Go to Products and then Add New to list your first item.
  7. Make a test order to check everything.
Tip: Keep a backup of your shop and update plugins often. Orders are important data.

Quick recap
